Communist Party members attended the national conference of the People's Assembly on Saturday.

Over 300 delegates from all over Britain participated and spoke in the conference, including Communist Party members, while activists of the London Communist Party hosted a stall and spoke to attendees about our vision for building the broad democratic movement for progressive change in Britain.

Conference motions focused on developing local groups, campaigning against public sector cuts and supporting the strikes, as well as the right to food and campaigning to save the NHS.

Silk Mill Lock Out

Xxxxxxhruewq.PNG

Communist Party of Britain June 24 2019:

DERBY, SILK MILL TURNOUT - Derby people from all walks of life rallied together at the weekend to commemorate a Derby 19th Century event – the Silk Mill Lock Out - that led to the beginnings of Trades unionism in Britain. “It should have Derby well up in Britain’s history books,” said Moz Greenshields, Secretary of Derby Area Trades Union Council, “ but it is still remains relatively unknown – even within Derby. But we are year on year putting an end to that.”

Karen Whelan of Disabled People Against Cuts lay the commemorative chaplet to the Silk Mill workers – who suffered 8 months of lock out and oppression for standing up for themselves and each other.

A lively march through town was sent off by Marios Doucas of the anti-austerity community organisation The People's Assembly, Cecile Wright referring to the Windrush community campaign, Elaine Rhatigan about the devastating impact of “Universal Credit”, Edward Symes from Extinction Rebellion, and Lisa Eldret of Derby City Council Labour Group.

Roger McKenzie of public service union UNISON and Tosh McDonald of ASLEF the rail union spoke about the heroic struggle in 1833/34 – and backed each other up with impassioned calls for workers today to combine and act together to stop “increasing poverty for working people, and massive wealth for the tiny minority at the top”. Derby MP Chris Williamson got a great reception when he told the crowd “Working together for justice and progress people are strong and unstoppable – but you can’t leave it to others – and now’s the time to get involved”
