Abshir Omar

Abshir Omar Mahamed is a Des Moines Iowa activist. Brother of Naimar Omar.


Born in Somalia, Abshir Omar fled that country’s civil war in the 1990s, living in a refugee camp in Kenya before immigrating to the United States and growing up in Seattle.

He attended Iowa State University and has lived in Des Moines since 2012. Already the board president for CAIR - Iowa, Mahamed said he’s been “inundated” with invitations to join additional nonprofit boards since Election Day.

In 2018 he’ll serve on the board of Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, on an advisory panel for the Refugee Alliance of Central Iowa and as an immigrant liaison for Hunger Free Polk County.[1]

June 20 2019 Bernie Sanders announces hiring Abshir Omar, a Somali refugee, as Iowa political coordinator. Official announcements coincides with World Refugee Day.

In 2017 Democratic Socialists of America had a member running for a seat on Des Moines’ non-partisan city council: Abshir Omar, 26, a Somali refugee.[2]
