Renee Mowatt graduated from Florida A&M University in 2014 with a B.S. in public relations. As a student, Renee’ witnessed the development and impact of the Dream Defenders after the murder of Trayvon Martin. She wrote for the FAMUAN newspaper and “Journey” magazine and completed communications internships serving Black and Brown communities in Tallahassee, FL, and Atlanta, GA. She studied abroad in South Africa, where she studied land reform policies and the agricultural impact of apartheid on Black South Africans. Renee’ gained skills in digital advertising and social strategy as a marketing specialist at Zimmerman Advertising. Her involvement with the Black Lives Matter Alliance of Broward County led her to the New Florida Majority, a statewide social justice organization, where she served as the communications coordinator. Renee’ currently lives in Alexandria, VA.
