Mid-Missouri Democratic Socialists of America is a Columbia Missouri of Democratic Socialists of America.

Founder

July 2018 Mid-Missouri Democratic Socialists of America in a room in Middlebush Hall at the University of Missouri. As that room filled up, the meeting moved to a larger room.

“It’s really blowing my mind that we have so many people in this room,” said Eric Scott, who organized the first meeting. “This shows us just how important and how much the time has come for us to come together.”

Scott is a field representative with Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 773 and was involved in the University of Missouri Coalition of Graduate Workers.

“I came to socialism, I came into organizing through the labor movement,” Scott said in introducing himself.

Maren Bell Jones, Democratic candidate for the Missouri House of Representatives, was at the meeting. She’s opposing Republican State Rep. Cheri Toalson Reisch in the November election.

“I shoot with the John Brown Gun Club, but I will not be bringing my gun with me into the library,” Jones said, referring to a public meeting with office holders at the Daniel Boone Regional Library into which Toalson Reisch brought her handgun.

Scott said there were simple actions the new group could take, using the example of the brake light clinic by the Mid-Missouri John Brown Gun Club, which was modeled on a DSA brake light clinic in New Orleans.

“We are working toward a future that chips away at and eventually abolishes capitalism,” Scott said.[1]
