Standing for AD 44

In 2019 Melissa Demyan stood from AD 44 for the California Democratic Party Central Committee.

I’ve been active in Democratic politics since 2008, and have often been asked: “why aren’t more millennials getting involved?” The hard truth is that until we embrace and elect more millennials, younger generations will not fully engage in the political process. As an incumbent Executive Board Representative under the age of 30, I have first-hand lived experience with the issues Democrats care most about, and I’ve been a champion for the progressive policy we desperately need: curbing climate change, debt-free tuition, attacking the housing crisis, and making healthcare a right in CA! By engaging my peers politically, I’ve encountered another hard truth: 58% of millennials said they don’t believe elected officials share their priorities and 62% believe elected officials are motivated by selfish reasons. My goal is to prove them wrong! My generation is the most diverse of any in history, and it’s going to take diverse candidates who share our priorities inspiring new Democrats to step into community service and party leadership. As Co-Chair of the CDP’s Resolutions Committee I helped pass a resolution calling on the DNC to reduce the influence of superdelegates in Presidential primaries, and was also successful in getting the CDP to recommend a “NO” endorsement on Prop 70 in the primary, and ‘YES on Props 8 & 10 in the general.

I’ve testified before the Rules Committee twice as your e-board member while advocating for officer financial disclosures, and the need for our party to lobby on behalf of legislation. If re-elected, I intend to work with other members of the board on creating a legislative scorecard to better hold elected officials accountable to our platform. I was born, adopted, and raised in Ventura Co.; I love our community. I’m a graduate from Emerge CA (a training program empowering women to run for office) and I currently work on staff at a healthcare union as a Political Organizer. I received my BA in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, & Sociology (Joint Honours Politics & Sociology) from Trinity College in Dublin Ireland. One of my first political jobs was helping to elect (and re-elect) our very own Congresswoman Julia Brownley; I’m so proud of all the work we’ve accomplished together over the years turning Ventura County red-to-blue! It’s been an honor representing you, and I humbly ask for your vote to re-elect me as your CDP E-Board Rep.[1]

Progressive slate

For my last ADEM post before the election, I want to urge Democrats in AD 44 (Westlake, Camarillo, Moorpark, Newbury Park, Oak Park, Port Heuneme, Thousand Oaks, and parts of Oxnard) to vote for Karen Stevens, Cathy Willott, Melissa Demyan, Noemi Tungui, Spencer Pletcher, Alessandro Kristian Neri, and the rest of the progressive slate in tomorrow's ADEM elections!

Having worked with most of these people during the Bernie Sanders campaign, I can confidently say, we need their voices at the state convention.
