New American Movement

In 1974 John Katz was a member of the Berkeley-Oakland chapter of the New American Movement.[1]

New American Movement 10th convention

In 1981 John Katz, East Bay NAM; Judy Johnson and William Johnson, Mobile NAM and Mel Pritchard, San Diego NAM led a workshop entitled Organizing Against Racist Violence at the 10th Convention of the New American Movement. The convention was held in a union headquarters in Chicago and ran from July 29 - August 2, 1981.[2]

East Bay Democratic Socialist Alliance

In the fall of 1981 the activists of New American Movement and Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee in the East Bay (primarily in the cities of Oakland and Berkeley) decided to join forces as the East Bay Democratic Socialist Alliance.

Prominent members of the new alliance included Sandra Chelnov (New American Movement) Liv Brown (New American Movement), Matthew Hallinan (Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee), John Katz (New American Movement), Charleen Raines (Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee), and Alan Snitow (Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee-New American Movement).[3]

Tribute to Ben Dobbs

On Sunday, June 7, 1981, the Los Angeles Chapter of the New American Movement sponsored a Tribute to Ben Dobbs for "His lifelong commitment to socialism". The event was held at the Miramar-Sheraton Hotel, Santa Monica, California. Sponsors of the event included John Katz.[4]

In 1983 John Katz was an East Bay Local, California delegate to the Democratic Socialists of America conference in New York City, October 14-16, 1983[5]

In November 1985, East Bay DSA delegates to the Democratic Socialists of America National Convention included, Suzanna Tadlock, Eileen Luna, Sandy Chelnov, Fran Biderman, Dean Ferguson, Dave Buchanan, Liv Brown, Matthew Hallinan, Alan Snitow, Ray Ahearn, John Katz, Dale Harrington, Angie Fa, Nancy Skinner.

Democratic Socialists of America

As at August 5, 1989, John Katz, Oakland, California, was listed as a possible California Local Representative for the Democratic Socialists of America.[6]

Transit planner

In 1992 John Katz was a Transit planner, for the city of San Francisco.[7]

"Full Employment in an Age of Globalization"

On June 8 1997 over 50 Bay Area DSA members and friends met to engage in a panel discussion on "Full Employment in an Age of Globalization". Focusing on Representative (and DSA Vice Chair) Ron Dellums' Living Wage, Jobs for All bill, HR 1050, the panel included David Bacon, labor reporter, John Katz of DSA, Ying Lee, legislative assistant to Congressmember Dellums and Barbara Arms of the Full Employment Coalition.
