Board Involvement
From 1969-1974 Calkins was head organizer for Active Clevelanders Together. Moving to Florida in 1977, John was the head organizer for Concerned Seniors of Dade and in 1981 became the head organizer for People United to Lead the Struggle for Equality in Miami. From 1985 to 1988 he was head organizer for Justice for All in Broward in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has been the Director of Direct Action and Training Center in Miami from 1984 to the present.[1]
Foreign Travel
In 1965 Calkins spent three years in Niger, West Africa in the Peace Corps, organizing purchasing and credit cooperatives.[1]
National Welfare Rights Organization
From 1969 to 1974 Calkins worked with the National Welfare Rights Organization.[1]

The Organizers' Forum
As at Jan 28, 2010 John Calkins was on the Board of Directors of The Organizers' Forum, a group with the mission of strengthening grassroots organizations by increasing capacity and stability of their democratic structures, to link organizing networks, and to improve on the skills and strategies employed by both community and labor organizers.[3]
