Heywood Broun

Radicalism

Broun ran for Congress on the Socialist Party USA ticket in 1930, unsuccessfully, and was expelled from the party in 1933 for speaking at a Communist Party USA rally. He founded the Newspaper Guild and served as that press union's first president.[1]

According to Time magazine, Broun was;[2]

A man of tremendous heart and unfailing kindness, Broun was led by his sympathies first into Socialism, then to the brink of Communism, though he never actually joined the Communist Party.
