Education

Lisa Hoyos graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Berkeley where she received degrees in peace and conflict studies and psychology.

In the mid 1990s Lisa Hoyos servedon the Board of Directors Oakland based Institute for Social and Economic Studies- sponsor of CrossRoads magazine, which sought to promote dialogue and building new alliances among progressives and leftists... and to bring diverse Marxist and socialist traditions to bear while exploring new strategies and directions for the progressive political movements^[1].

Career/activism

Prior to working in South Africa, Lisa Hoyos was the political and organizing director^[2]of the South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council, where her primary roles were to build the capacity of unions to elect public officials, implement policies which support working families, and support the organizing campaigns of local unions.

Prior to assuming this position, she was the education coordinator of Working Partnerships, the policy non-profit affiliated with the Labor Council. In that role, she designed a leadership institute which brought labor and community activists, clergy, and policymakers together to study and develop progressive economic policy.

Hoyos also worked for two years on the staff of State Senator Tom Hayden and as a legislative analyst with the Senate Natural Resources Committee. Her experience in the environmental movement includes working as an organizer with Greenpeace and on the staff of the Environmental Project on Central America. Prior labor movement experience includes working for two years organizing Latino immigrant workers with the Justice for Janitors Campaign. Lisa Hoyos is also a trainer with Just Economics, an organization focusing on economics education and popular education.
